Og i den egenskapen kan jeg si at jeg er sjokkert over hvor forferdelig denne innsatsen er: en ny kinofilm for Nintendo for en generasjon som ikke er gammel nok til å huske/vite om live-actionen fra 1993Super Mario Bros.Det er hyggelig å se på, med animatører som direkte oversetter den fantastiske estetikken til kildematerialet til den store skjermen, men den klarer ikke å utøve enda en oppfinnsom eller smart idé. I stedet fungerer den mer som en sjekkliste med nikk til spillene enn en narrativ funksjon.
I et forsøk på å lage en slags opprinnelseshistorie for franchisen, introduserer manusforfatteren Matthew Fogels manus Mario (Chris Pratt) og Luigi (Charlie Day) som søsken som bor i Brooklyn, New York, som nylig har sluttet i jobben for å starte sitt eget rørleggerfirma. De blir sett på som vitser og skuffelser av familie og venner, som motiverer dem til å prøve å bevise seg selv, og når de får vite om massive flom i området deres, prøver de å ta grep. Over hele linjen er det som om studioet var redd for at filmen ikke fikk pengene sine fra det populære talentet som ble vervet og insisterte på at skuespillerne tonede ting som ble gjort slik at stemmene deres kunne gjenkjennes. Det høres kanskje ekstremt kynisk ut, men det er en holdning rent inspirert av vibbene i verket.
Super Mario Bros.-filmen ser bra ut, men det er et tak på ros som kan tilbys.
Illumination Entertainment har absolutt laget en film som ser bra ut iSuper Mario Bros.-filmen… men det er ikke for mye ros å gi gitt at det ikke er mye skapelse; det er innovasjon i stedet for oppfinnelse, og selv det er litt generøst. Barn vil utvilsomt elske det, og det vil ha dem alle krevende videospill, leker og alle varianter av ephemera til neste store kjepphest kommer, men alle som ser det med et litt kritisk blikk vil gjenkjenne det for det tomme IP-karet som det er.
